Pekan Kebudayaan Nasional 2020 (National Culture Week), Indonesia
Pekan Kebudayaan National (National Culture Week) 2020, was held from October 31, 2020 until November 30, 2020, mostly in Jakarta but some events were also held in Yogyakarta and another city in Indonesia. This year is the second year of this event. In the pandemic situation, opening ceremony, various shows and discussion was held virtually. Nevertheless, Pekan Kebudayaan National (PKN) 2020 was the biggest cultural event in the world which was held virtually. Involving more than 4,791 artisans, 27 conference themes, 93 shows, and 1,477 works of fine art all was exhibit virtually.
The general theme of PKN 2020 was “Nafas Bumi” (Breath of the Earth). In the opening ceremony this theme was presented in the form of colossal performances featuring collaborations of Indonesian dances, the work of archipelago artists and cultural observers. Napas Bumi inserts a message of Indonesian cultural wisdom to overcome life's challenges. Indonesia has a tradition that can be a fortress of extraordinary resilience that is able to provide strength to all Indonesian people. Please visit www.pkn.id to see the footage of the event.
In addition to the virtual event, PKN also celebrated in various museums including Museum Gadjah and National Gallery Museum in Jakarta. We had an opportunity to visit these two museums. In Museum Gadjah, we were allowed to see various collections of Indonesian pre-history including statues from various ancient era from several province in Indonesia. We also saw various art works from traditions of diverse ethnics throughout Indonesia. These works of art are still very much living in our society. This is one of the uniqueness of Indonesia as compared to any other nations. In our country what is displayed in the museum is actually still being used in our everyday life. In other words, this is one of the proofs that our culture is actually timeless and sustained throughout millennia.
In the National Gallery there was held Immersive Exhibition of Affandi, one of our painting maestros. This exhibition presented digitalized Affandi’s paintings merge with artistic audiovisual stories. For us, this show is one of the most spectacular exhibitions. All the paintings give the feeling as they are like more alive, curates with details story and captivating audiovisual.
In the pandemic situation, we are very grateful that government of Indonesia still managed to held Pekan Kebudayaan Nasional, the event that shows the richness of Indonesian culture from Sabang to Merauke. This event is very important in order to awaken cultural awareness to the society, locally as well as globally. We hope that this event continues to be held year after year. Despite the pandemic situation, we have seen that this year, the event was so much better and greater than last year. This proves the commitment of government of Indonesia to hold up culture as key in not only national development but most importantly in strengthening cultural characteristic of Indonesian people itself. There is no question that culture is the foundation of our society as well as tie of our union, Indonesia.
