The Ancient City Ayutthaya, Thailand
We visited Ancient City Ayutthaya in Thailand, about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok. It was capital of the Kingdom of Siam, and a prosperous international trading port, from 1350 until razed by the Burmese in 1767. The ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, an archaeological site that contains palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues. The park is on an island between 3 rivers.
We visited Wat Chaiwatthanaram. It is a Buddhist temple in the city of Ayutthaya Historical Park, Thailand, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, outside Ayutthaya island. It is one of Ayutthaya's best-known temples and a major tourist attraction. The central platform is surrounded by eight chedi-shaped chapels (Meru Thit Meru Rai), which are connected by a rectangular cross-shaped passage (Phra Rabieng). The passage had numerous side entries and was originally roofed and open inwards, but today only the foundations of the pillars and the outside wall still stand. Along the wall, there were 120 sitting Buddha statues, probably painted in black and gold. We also have the opportunity to visit The Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya which is located in the center of old Ayutthaya, between Chi Kun Road and Naresuan Road in the northeast corner of Phra Ram Park. |
We continue our trip to Wat Lokaya Sutha (also written as Wat Lokayasutharam). Although it is not one of the most famous historic sites in Ayutthaya, it remains an impressive location to visit. And that is thanks to the temple’s most striking feature, the giant reclining Buddha image. At 42 meters long and 8 meters high, the statue towers over the devotees who come here to make offerings. This visiting program to Ayutthaya ancient city of Siam is so precious for our foundation to enrich our knowledge about the prehistoric era at the same time to see how culture is applied in everyday life of a society back then and how people maintain the value of nature in their behaviors toward their fellow men as well as environmental surround nowadays. |
