The National Bangkok Museum
We, together with ICOMOS speakers, visited the National Museum Bangkok on October 31st, 2022. The National Museum Bangkok is situated at the Phra Ratchawang Bowon Sathan Mongkol: Palace of the Front or “Wang Na,” which was constructed in 1782, in the same period as the construction of the Grand Palace, during the early Bangkok period.
In this National Museum we found out about the origin of history of Thai art, which evolved through the eras by the various masterpieces from the pre-historic, Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Lopbuti, Sukhothai, Lanna, Ayutthaya, Thonbury and Rattanakosin (Bangkok) at Siwamokkhaphiman Audience Hall. There are several halls that we visited including Permanent Exhibition of Thai Traditional Arts, Permanent Exhibition of Thai History – Archaeology, and Thai Architecture and Palace of the Front. Permanent Exhibition of the Thai Traditional Arts are exhibited at Phra Wiman the Central Palace Building which had been the residences of the several viceroys of Bangkok, and the Royal Funeral Chariots Building. The fine art objects are categorized in a number of groups, such as royal transportation, royal regalia, the theater arts of puppetry and masked dance, metal works, royal vehicles, wooden handicrafts, royal textiles, Buddhist monk utensils, royal and ecclesiastical mother – of – pearl inlay utensils and arms. |
Learn Thai history-archaeology and style of art throughout the countless art - historical perids and sites in Thailand at Building of Maha Surasinghanat or South Wing and Praphat Phiphitthaphan or North Wing. For instance, pre-historic art Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Ancient Hindu scultures, Lopburi Sukhothai, Lanna, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin (Bangkok).
Thai architecture and Palace of the front is the architectural masterpiece of the Bangkok period within the Palace of the Front. For instance, the Buddhaisawan Chapel house Phra Buddha Sihing – one of the most important Buddha images, as well as a marvelous mural painting of the early Bangkok period. We also enjoyed the Siwamokkhaphim Audience Hall, the Red House – traditional Thai teakwood house, and many others. |

We found out this National Museum so interesting because we could understand the history of Thailand in general, including the development of each period from time to time. The museum was very well maintained and the guide gave us much valuable information regarding the objects and artifacts which were displayed in the museum.
This visiting program to National Bangkok Museum is so precious for our foundation to enrich our knowledge about the prehistoric era at the same time to see how culture is applied in everyday life of a society back then and how people maintain the value of nature in their behaviors toward their fellow men as well as environmental surround nowadays in Thailand.
